In coming across this front page in http://www.newseum.org/ , I was horrified by the quality of the photograph used in the centerpiece as well as throughout the rest of the page. You can see this page here at http://www.newseum.org/media/dfp/pdf18/CA_SBNP.pdf . The main photograph in the Christmas mail delivery centerpiece is so blurry and out of focus in the background that it makes my eyes hurt. The headline running above the photograph is also ineffective as it has far too many words. If I have to take so long to read the headline, I probably would not want to get to the story. I also think the headline lacks creativity. The out of focus photograph of the delivery man might have had the intention to make it look rushed, as the story is about the start of the busiest season for mail delivery. However, the fuzzy image is far too distracting for someone who is attempting to read the paper. I also would have liked the cutline below the photograph to tell me more about the story than I already know from the headline. In addition, I feel it was not necessary to picture the same delivery man twice by showing him again in a smaller photograph running under the main one. I think the centerpiece would have been more effective if the second smaller photograph was chosen as the main photo, while the other photograph was taken out entirely. When glancing at the rest of the surrounding stories, I noticed that not only were the photographs out of focus, but they were also too small. The photos used in the other stories are so small and blurry that I cannot even see the faces of the people pictured. What are your thoughts about the use of photos on this page?
