Organized Chaos

I came across this front page on www.newseum.org and the centerpiece caught my eye. Other than the fact that I always wondered how postal workers handle the massive amount of mail around the holiday season, I think the editor of this page took a few tasteful risks. I liked the typeface for the main headline and the way it looked like it had been stamped onto the page. I also thought it was unique the way the article displayed the statistics. The use of different sizes prioritized the numbers and made them look as interesting as numbers can look.

However, I thought the order of elements was a bit risky, and not necessarily in a good way. It looked like the subhead was placed above the photo and the main head was placed below, which is odd, especially for a centerpiece. And though I see what the editor was going for, I thought the erratic use of font sizes looked a bit messy.

What do you guys think about this centerpiece in general? Do you think it is creative or disorganized?

I agree that the font for the headline grabs my interest, but that's about the only aspect of this centerpiece that does. To be honest, I wouldn't be interested in reading any of the pieces on this page; after first glance there is entirely too much font, it's completely overwhelming. I think the numbers below the story may be a little too dominating as well.

The way the headline is stamped onto the page is extremely creative and effective. It immediately grabbed my interest. I do agree with you that the cutline should not have been placed above the photo. If I was reading the page I would definetely like to see the photograph first, then read the headline and then bounce back to read the cutline. The use of numbers, especially the big zero in the middle is very unique but a bit distracting. I agree with you that the fonts should not have been so varied and that zero is just glaring at me from that page. It is too large and shouldnt have been. Very nice choice of post!
