Even though I am a die hard Yankees fan, I can recognize when enough is enough. For the fifth straight day, the Yankees involved in the steroid scandal have been featured on the front page of the New York Daily News (you can scroll through the covers here). I think this is completely superfluous and could be blocking other news from reaching the public.

The NY tabloid newspapers are infamous for running flashy sports photos. However, these are usually on the back pages, where many in sports journalism believe sports belongs. I happen to believe in this convention as well.

There is no doubt that this is a huge story in the country and I guess even more so in the NY area, but do we need this five days in a row?

Personally, I believe this is a question of our news culture and not just the judgment of the NY Daily News staff. Has sports become so important in our country that we need to be filled in on the smallest of developments on the front page of our papers every day? Is five consecutive days of Andy Pettitte, Roger Clemens and their designer drugs crossing the line? Aren't there more pressing issues in the country? In New York?

Sports stories are money stories. They sell papers, and the tabloid papers like the Daily News or New York Post live for this kind of scandal. They aren’t going to stop reporting on this until they have fully exhausted readers, and until the next big event they deem newsworthy occurs.
