In class we discussed libel and ethic laws and how law suits can come about when a publication makes claims without checking their facts.
Actress, Scarlett Johansson, has been in the news recently for suing US Weekly about an article the magazine published. The article claimed that she has had plastic surgery on her nose. Johansson denies the claims, and her team released this statement, “The publication made a pathetic attempt to validate its story by using two cover photos of Scarlett that were taken years apart with obviously different make-up and lighting, and then relying on an ‘expert’s opinion’ (based solely on looking at the two photos) on what ‘might’ have been done. It wasn’t.”
US Weekly’s claims could easily be considered to be libel because they have the ability to potentially ruin the actresses reputation when it comes to fans and future employers.
